Dear Jim,
I know this letter is long overdue but leaving Fort Payne and getting settled here was a long tiring event.
However, I did want you to know how much I appreciated the fact that you introduced Bill and me to long-term care insurance. The purpose of this letter is to express some comments on long term care insurance that you may want to pass on to other people who are in doubt about how much this insurance will help financially not only for nursing home expenses, but also for at home care.
In my opinion, long term care insurance was misnamed. It should have been called”Peace of Mind” insurance!
When I first broached the subject to my husband, Bill, he said, “No, we’ll never need it and besides, we can probably pay all necessary medical bills”. Thank goodness I did not go along with that decision! I was determined with or without his agreement. I was going to look into some kind of supplemental long term care insurance. What really pushed me to do this was that Bill’s father and grandfather had Alzheimer’s disease. I was also concerned about my own family history which was paralyzing strokes.
We had only had the long term care insurance a few years when Bill started showing signs of Alzheimer’s. For the 2 years he was at home, I needed someone with me during the day and, later, at night. Without the financial help from the long term care insurance, our savings and investment income would have been gone. I would have had to sell our home. The nursing home costs went from $3,200.00 per month to $4,000 per month in 2 years.
Without the long term care insurance we would have never had made it financially and I strongly advise anyone who comes from a family with a history of long term disabilities to take the giant step to get long term insurance as soon as you can.
There are many wonderful plans out there. And, the younger you are, the lower the rates.
Thank you for all you did for Bill and me.
Anne
